EIR’s Bill Jones Tells CGTN’s Mike Walters His Views on the Just-Concluded Xi-Trump Summit

(EIRNS)—CGTN Anchor Mike Walter did a second interview with former EIR White House Correspondent Bill Jones on September 27 on the outcome of the Xi-Trump Summit. Jones indicated his surprise and excitement about how well the summit went. " I think the visit has taken the relationship to a different level," he said, not so much because of the concrete agreements coming out of it, which were still not fully clarified, but because of the tremendous friendship that was apparent in the personal relationship between the two leaders. “I don’t think there has been such a close relationship between a Chinese and an American leader perhaps since Nixon,” he said. Jones even indicated that he felt that with this relationship there would be no major conflict between the two countries that could not be resolved by the leaders. Walters noted that the code word was “constructive relationship of strategic stability.” Jones said that this meant keeping the relationship on track through whatever differences might arise. He said, however, that he considered this a “bottom line” for the relationship and saw a real possibility for moving it a bit closer to something of a partnership as President Xi had expressed the hope for. “Now we are still far from a partnership,” Jones said, " but given the relationship between the two, I can even see President Trump perhaps willing to move somewhat in that direction." “Although there will be a reaction from those elements who just don’t like China,” he warned. Jones also pointed out that the communication between the two sides would be extended to regular communication at all levels in order to prevent crises from occurring. “But more importantly, I think there is at the highest level an understanding that the two countries need each other, and I think they need each other even more than they think, and that cooperation will get us further in terms of moving the US economy further than to treat China as a rival. And I think that is becoming clear to a certain extent.” [wcj] |
